Better to Be Fake and Happy Chapter One Extended Author's Note

Review Response:

Chapter Commentary:

Yeah, I know how this looks. From how this starts off, you’re probably thinking that Ellie is going to be a poor abuse victim who can’t stand up for herself who is saved by the love of one of the brothers. I’ll tell you that two of those assumptions are correct, and the other two are wrong. Intrigued? Good, you should be. I can’t give away too much but know that this story is going to go the “only thing that can save you from a bad relationship is sex with a different guy” route. I’m aware that is a common trope in fanfiction and I’m trying to steer as clear as I can from that as possible. You’ll see what I’m talking about in the end.

That is if I wrote this well enough to be understandable. I must admit; next chapter is probably going to be the worst chapter in the entire fic. That’s mostly because a big point in this entire fic relies on everyone accepting this character’s reasoning for deciding to do what he does, and I don’t think I pulled that off well. The reasoning isn’t really one of my strong suits, but I couldn’t think of anything better, so I’m sorry ahead of time.

I also apologize for a lack of the brothers in this chapter, but at least one of them got a cameo! ;)

One last thing to note, parts of this story are based on the real-life murders of Dawn and Richard Heikkla by their adopted son Matthew. None of the characters depicted herein are to resemble any real people - living or dead. This author holds the utmost respect for the remaining members of the Heikkla family and the family of the unnamed young woman kidnapped by Matthew following the murders and asks that you do not contact either Joshua Heikkla (the Heikkila's surviving child) or the aforementioned unnamed young woman who has gone by Mara Morales and Linda Perez in certain publications related to the murders. Both these names are aliases. Please do not harass these people and respect the young woman's desire to remain nameless. Thank you.

Mew-isms:

“Rain Down and Destroy Me”: The title comes from the twenty one pilots song “An Implicit Demand for Proof” from their self-titled album. All credit for the line goes to the songwriter, Tyler Joseph.

“‘Maybe you do have RAD.”: Stands for Reactive Attachment Disorder. Some children who go through the foster care system develop an extreme inability to create attachments and meaningful relationships with those around them, whether through abuse or just from being shuffled around so much and sometimes this causes them to become frustrated and act out violently. I do not think that Ellie suffers from this, but I can see someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about trying to diagnose her with this.

“After all she could be staring down the next Ted Bundy or John Wayne Gacey.”: Two very infamous serial killers who were active in the United States in the 70s. Gacey sexually assaulted killed approximately 33 teenage boys and young men, while Bundy killed as many as 30 young women whom he also kidnapped and raped.

“‘Tis but a scratch,’”: A reference to the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Translation Notes:

Puedo conseguir diez dólares de vuelta?: Can I get ten dollars back?

Lunes, el martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes…: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday…
